I feel bad that the print media is on its way out. Newspapers are closing everyday. The problem that I see is that they put their own slant on the news instead of doing a fair an equal job of conveying facts. The newspaper I used to get was the Salem News. I loved getting up in the morning and reading it. I know it always had a Republican slant on its opinion or editorial page but I noticed that the guest columnists were Conservative at a 10 to one rate. I actually emailed both the editor and owner explaining that I needed both sides of issues in order to make up my mind on issues . I did not want the RNC talking points or the DNC talking points either. I required a more balanced approach to the news. Since all three papers in my county were owned and operated by the same group they just parroted each other. The response I received from the owner and editor were negative. The next day I called up to quit and when the woman asked my why I told her . She just laughed at me and said OK.
Today I had my wife pick up a copy to see if things had changed. Here were the guest columnists on the editorial page .The Editor did a piece on how unfair Obama was in the area of trade. There was an article by Bill O"Reilly.Michelle Malikin,Pat Buchanan,Andrew Napopitano, and Ben Shapiro all attacking either Democrats or the president. There was a fluff piece called Classic Andy Rooney. Nothing has changed.
Very few newspapers are owned independently and more and more seem to be Conservative just like the radio stations I get. I guess it is more important to advance one political party instead of being the watch dog of our freedoms. I could care less if they shut down. I will miss local news but cannot support a paper that pushes one side of an issue 100% , There is no reason they can't have a couple columns written by Progressives every Sunday and during the week. I give the Salem News two thumbs down for fairness.
